「ワインの女王」と呼ばれるほどボルドーの中で最も女性的なワイン
12世紀の頃、現在のシャトー マルゴー付近は「ラ モット ド マルゴー」の名で呼ばれていた農園でした。
「ラ モット」とは「小さな丘」を意味し、概して土地が痩せているメドックの他の地域と同様、さとう大根や穀物の畑として利用されていました。
16世紀にレスナック家が保有すると、水捌けの良いこの土地がワイン用ブドウの生産に向いていると考え、栽培を始めたのがシャトー マルゴーの始まりとなります。18世紀に入ると、それまで色も薄く水っぽいものだったワインの醸造技術が大きく進歩しました。その改良には、当時の運営責任者だったベロン氏が、水っぽさの原因である朝露がついたブドウを摘むのを止めさせ、また初めて土壌の重要性に気づいたことが大きいと言われています。
18世紀、シャトー マルゴーは大富豪ジョゼフ・ド・フュメルの所有となりました。彼にはマリー・ルイーズという娘がおり、そこに目をつけたのがルイ15世の愛妾デュ・バリー夫人でした。やはりルイ15世の愛妾ポンパドゥール夫人がシャトー ラフィットを宮廷に持ち込むと、次の愛妾デュ・バリー夫人もワインを持ち込もうとしたのです。デュ・バリー夫人は義理の弟をマリー・ルイーズと結婚させシャトー マルゴーを手に入れてしまいます。
こうしてデュ・バリー夫人が愛飲し、宮廷に持ち込んだことでシャトー マルゴーの名声は一気に高まりました。

壮麗な建築様式・１８５５年第１級格付け・１９７８年大復活！！
ルイ15世が亡くなるとデュ・バリー夫人は零落し、夫人の義理の弟でマリー・ルイーズの夫がアルジクール伯爵と改姓、シャトー マルゴーを手にしますが、フランス革命が起こりデュ・バリー夫人、アルジクール伯爵夫妻、そしてジョセフ・ド・フュメルもギロチン台の露と消え、シャトーは革命政府に没収されました。
その後ド・ラ・コロニラ侯爵がシャトー マルゴーを所有します。彼は当時一流の建築家ルイ・コンブに依頼して、エチケットの絵柄にもなっている壮麗なギリシャ神殿風のシャトーの建物を1810年に完成させました。侯爵の死後はスペイン人のアレクサンドル・アグアド、そしてその息子の再婚相手でスコットランド人女性のエミリー・マグドーネルへと所有者がかわっていきます。エミリーはナポレオン三世の妻ユージェニーに侍女として仕えましたが、そのナポレオン３世の命による有名な1855年のパリ万国博覧会の格付けの際、シャトー マルゴーはシャトー ラフィットに次ぐ第１級第２位に格付けされたのです。
しかしナポレオン３世が失脚するやエミリーはユージェニーとイギリスへ亡命。その後、病虫害や大恐慌などにより所有者は転々となります。1934年、シャトーはボルドーを代表するネゴシアン（仲買商）、ジネステ家の所有となりました。ジネステ家は当初は投資、改良を行いましたが次第に評判を落とし、1974年の「ワインの大暴落」で大きな痛手を被って手放すことになります。
売りに出されたシャトー マルゴーを、当初アメリカの酒販業者が買おうとしましたが、フランス政府が「シャトー マルゴーを外国人に売り渡す事は、エッフェル塔やモナ・リザを売却するようなことで、許されない」と介入、結局1977年にシャトーを買い取ったのはギリシャ系のアンドレ・メンツェロプーロスでした。
メンツェロプーロスは各国での事業で財を成し、フランスでもスーパーマーケット「フェリックス ポタン」を経営する実業家でした。シャトー マルゴー購入後すぐに、彼は大規模な投資を行いブドウ畑の改良や醸造設備の刷新を行いました。またボルドー大学の醸造学者エミール・ペイノーを技術顧問に迎え、更なる品質の向上に努めました。
その結果は直後の1978年ヴィンテージにすぐに現れ、シャトー マルゴーは見事に復活を遂げたのです。1979年からはセカンドラベルを導入、これが「パヴィヨン ルージュ デュ シャトー マルゴー」となるわけですが、これによってシャトー マルゴーとしてリリースされるワイン（いわゆる「シャトーもの」）の品質がさらに向上しました。
１９８０年のアンドレの死後、未亡人ローラ、そして娘のコリーヌ夫妻の所有となります。1983年からは支配人ポール・ポンタリエが運営、ワイン生産は磐石なものとなっています。
シャトー マルゴーの年間生産量は約13,000ケース。セカンドラベルの「パヴィヨン ルージュ デュ シャトー マルゴー」は約17,000ケースが生産されています。ソーヴィニヨンブランだけから造られる辛口の白ワイン「パヴィヨン ブラン デュ シャトー マルゴー」は、樽で醗酵と熟成がおこなわれ、年間約3,000ケースが生産されています。これはメドック地区最高の白ワインと言われていますが、メドックのアペラシオン（呼称統制）では白ワインは認められていないため、広域のアペラシオンであるACボルドーとなっています。

いろんな場面に登場するワイン
シャトー マルゴーは「ワインの女王」といわれるボルドーワインの中でも「最も女性的なワイン」と評され、「ボルドーの女王」とも呼ばれています。またデュ・バリー夫人以外の著名人にも愛され、物語にまで登場しています。
マルクス主義者で知られるエンゲルスは「あなたにとって幸せとは」と聞かれ、「シャトー マルゴー1848年」と答えたとか。
また「武器よさらば」「誰がために鐘は鳴る」などの小説で知られるアーネスト・ヘミングウェイは酒をこよなく愛し、キューバ滞在中にフローズン ダイキリを愛飲していたことはよく知られていますが、彼はまたフランス滞在中にはシャトー マルゴーを愛飲、生まれた孫娘に「マーゴ」と名づけてしまったほどでした。この年１９５４年、彼は「老人と海」でノーベル文学賞を受賞しています。
映画「ソフィーの選択」では、ケビン・クライン演じるネイサンが「特別の日だから特別のワインを」といって用意したのがシャトー マルゴー１９３７でした。メリル・ストリープ演じるソフィーは、一口含むと思わずこう言いました。「もしこの世で聖人のように清く生きて、そして死んだら、天上の楽園で飲ませてくれるのはこのワインよ。」
また渡辺淳一の小説「失楽園」では、不倫関係にあった主人公とその愛人が最期に、このワインに毒を入れて二人は心中します。
これらのエピソードや物語にも、あこがれすら抱かせられるシャトー マルゴー。多くの人々を魅了し続けています。

The 2018 Chateau Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, representing 36% of the crop this year. The wine has a pH of 3.8 and 14% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal tantalizing scents of crame de cassis, wild blueberries and Black Forest cake with hints of redcurrant jelly, rose oil, dark chocolate and cedar chest plus a touch of star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate bursts with opulent black fruit, fragrant earth and floral layers, supported by a rock-solid structure of exquisitely ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless backbone of freshness, finishing with fantastic length. This is classic Margaux at its most seductive, although it is, rather amazingly, approachable and absolutely delicious right now. But, to enjoy its full glory, you will want to cellar it for at least 6-8 years and then watch it metamorphize over the next 40+ years.

2018年シャトー・マルゴーのグランヴァンは、近年のヴィンテージの中でも最高傑作のひとつに挙げられます。2015年および2016年の記憶がまだ鮮明であるだけに、このパフォーマンスはなおさら圧巻です。
驚くべき凝縮感
シャトー・マルゴー 2018の魅力はその驚くべき凝縮です。粒サイズは小さく、収量も比較的低く、それが極めて高いタンニン指数の主因と考えられます。それでも、パワフルさを持て余している印象は一切なく、アロマを引き立て、ストラクチュアを支えています。後味の余韻の長さもこのワインの特徴です。収穫した葡萄の僅か36％がこのグラン・ヴァンに使用されました。

The 2017 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little coaxing to reveal alluring notes of blackcurrant cordial, Black Forest cake and black raspberries with suggestions of candied violets, tilled soil, fallen leaves, licorice and espresso plus wafts of underbrush and rosehip tea. Medium-bodied, the elegance and finesse on the palate is simply bedazzling, exuding a quiet intensity of fresh black fruits layered with oh-so-subtle floral and earth nuances. It has a soft, velvety texture and seamless freshness to support the tightly wound flavors, finishing long and perfumed. Beautiful! This grand vin accounts for just 37% of the crop.

2017年のシャトー・マルゴーは、カベルネソーヴィニヨン89％、メルロ8％、カベルネフラン2％、プティヴェルド1％のブレンドで、総生産量の37％がグラン・ヴァンになりました。もちろん新樽比率100％で熟成されています。この年はおよそ10％の葡萄畑が遅霜の被害にあったため収穫量も低く、それによる品質維持の努力が行われた結果、カベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンの比率が2016年に続き非常に高くなっており「カベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンの年」とも言われました。
深みのあるガーネットパープルカラーの2017年シャトー・マルゴーは、豪華なキルシュ、ラズベリーのジャム、野生のブルーベリーなどの果実に、バラやスミレ、スパイス、森の下草やトリュフが感じられ、きめ細かく豪華でしっかりとしたタンニンを持つ余韻の長いワインに仕上げられています。また伝説的で壮麗な2015年や2016年に続く味わいとの評価も得ており、2060年位まで優雅に寝かせられるだけの長命なワインとなっています。誕生日や記念日用のヴィンテージワインとしてもリザーブしておきたいお薦めの1本です！

The 2015 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet
Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Medium garnet-purple colored, the nose features oh-so-seductive
notes of warm blackberries, cassis and black forest cake with touches of forest floor,
sandalwood, anise and cigar boxes plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, it
delivers taut, muscular, densely packed black fruits and exotic spice flavor layers
supported by a very firm backbone of grainy tannins with oodles of freshness and a long,
savory finish. It is tightly knit and a little reticent at this very youthful stage;
afford it at least 15 years in the cellar, and it will open out into a classic Chateau
Margaux of incredible proportions. Readers may be interested to know that this wine is
beautifully packaged in a special commemorative bottle honoring winemaker Paul
Pontellier, who passed away in 2016. The gold-etched black bottle bears the message,
“Hommage à Paul Pontellier” at the bottom. This 2015 is an achingly beautiful swan
song from an incredibly gifted winemaker, taken from us too soon. In my view, this
alone makes this vintage more than worth the investment for the many lovers of history
in a bottle.

2015年はシャトー・マルゴーにとってシャトー建築200周年という特別なヴィンテージであり、英国の世界的建築家ノーマン・フォスター卿がデザインした新しいカーヴから
旅立つ最初のキュヴェになりました。2015年は天候に恵まれた素晴らしい年となり、マルゴー・アペラシオンのヴィンテージポイントは96点と傑出した当たり年となりました。
また1983年から醸造チームを率い、2016年春に他界した総支配人「ポール＝ポンタリエ」氏を称えた記念ボトルでもあります。ボトル本来のラベルの位置に特別にこのヴィンテージの為に描かれた豪華なシルクスクリーンのプリントが施され、金色にエッジングされたブラックボトルの下部には「Hommage a Paul Pontellie」と書かれており、彼の手掛けた最後のヴィンテージとして敬意が表されています。
ワインはカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン87％、メルロー8％、カベルネ・フラン3％とプティ・ヴェルド2％といういつもよりカベルネ・ソーヴィニョンの比率の高い最終ブレンドとなり、この年の総生産量の35％がグラン・ヴァンになりました。もちろん新樽比率100％で熟成されています。
パーカーポイントも99点とほぼパーフェクトといえ、その類い稀な品質は2005年、2009年、2010年のような完璧な気象条件からの恩恵となっています。評価では2050年〜2070年位まで優雅に寝かせられるだけの長命なワインとなっており、シャトー・マルゴーの輝かしい歴史にその名を刻む、伝説的な永遠に価値ある1本となるでしょう。

Given that Margaux's second wine contains plenty of fruit that made it into the grand vin just a decade or two ago, great things are to be expected from this bottling. Yet I was nonetheless taken aback by the quality of the 2019 Pavillon Rouge. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals and sweet spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is an exquisite Pavillon Rouge that is well worth seeking out. I confess that I don't buy many second wines, but I did purchase a case of this, with alacrity, right after tasting it.

The 2019 Pavillon Rouge is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, accounting for 47% of the crop. The alcohol came in at 14.2%, the IPT was 75, and the pH was 3.66. Deep garnet-purple in color, it begins a little closed and broody, soon unfurling to offer notes of tar, black licorice, cracked peppercorns and woodsmoke over a core of Morello cherries, boysenberries and warm cassis plus an earthy touch of forest floor. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant, refreshing and wonderfully refined, with beautifully ripe, plush tannins and impressive freshness lifting the black fruit and earthy layers with a long finish. It should age beautifully!

パヴィヨン・ルージュ2019年はプリムール評価時の『92-94+』点から、ポイント『95』点へ評価が上昇しており、ワインアドボケイト誌での過去最高点を獲得しています。この評価点は少し前のグラン・ヴァンに匹敵しており、このヴィンテージのグラン・ヴァンが100点パーフェクトポイントを獲得したことを考えるとシャトーのセカンドラベルのレベルの高さが納得できます。
カベルネ比率の高いパヴィヨン・ルージュ
ワインは収穫の47％がこのパヴィヨン・ルージュに使用され、そのうちカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンが76％と、例年より非常に高い割合でカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンがブレンドされています。深みのあるガーネットパープルの色合いのパヴィヨン・ルージュはアルコール度も14.2度と高く、2050年位までゆったりとした成長が期待される長期熟成タイプに仕上がっています。誕生年や記念年のヴィンテージワインとしてセラーリングもお薦めしたいワインです。

The 2018 Pavillon Rouge is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, with 14.5% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with vivacious scents of chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries and blackcurrant pastilles with suggestions of bay leaves, pencil lead, tapenade and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a generous amount of black fruit at the core with loads of earthy and savory accents and a soft, approachable frame, finishing long with an herbal lift. It is approachable now but should be a lot more expressive with a couple of years in bottle and drink nicely over the following 15 to 18 years or more.

2018年は素晴らしいヴィンテージイヤー
2018年は20世紀初頭以降で最も暑い年となり、フランスの年平均気温を1.4℃上回る数値を記録し、
マルゴーアペラシオン全体のヴィンテージチャートも96点と2016年に次ぐ高得点の年となりました。
深みのあるガーネットパープルカラーで、チョコレートで覆われたチェリー、桑の実、ブラックカラントのトローチ
の香りがグラスで広がります。たっぷりと凝縮した黒い果実味があり、土っぽい香ばしさとハーブの
アクセントも感じられる仕上がりです。
いまだかつてない高数値のタンニン＝熟成型
シャトー・マルゴーのグランヴァンにならって、少しばかりのレベル差こそあれど、パヴィヨン・ルージュ 2018もまた、たくましさと絹のようななめらかさ、そして余韻の長さが印象的です。テイスティングの最初から最後まで、タンニンが優しく寄り添います。これほどまで高数値のタンニンを含むパヴィヨン・ルージュはいまだかつてありません。しかもテイスティングのどの段階においても収斂性をまったく感じさせない仕上がりです。

The 2014 Pavillon Rouge is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Bottled in July 2016, it remains quite rich and outgoing on the nose with copious red cherry, blackberry and spice-box aromas. With aeration it reveals a little more sous-bois, the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a tightly knit opening. Certainly this has lost the corpulence that it showed in barrel, lost that puppy fat. Now the linearity comes through, engendered by the cool nights during the growing season, and still delivers that mineral-rich finish. I still maintain that it will need three years in bottle just to soften the tannins.

Also a stunning wine, the 2003 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux is a sleeper of the vintage. Much fresher and less evolved than I would expect a second wine to be from this vintage, it is a Margaux-like effort with a flowery character, good precision and freshness, red and black currant notes, and an attractive, medium-bodied, surprisingly concentrated mouthfeel. It is clearly one of the finest second wines made in this vintage. It can be consumed over the next 5-8 years.

Coming from vines that are now over 40 years old, representing only one-third of the
total production and, as always, produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2015 Pavillon
Blanc du Chateau Margaux was matured for eight months in barrels, 20% new. The nose
simply sings of fresh peaches, pink grapefruit and almonds with touches of dried
herbs, crushed stones, allspice and honeycomb plus a waft of elderflower. The
medium-bodied palate reveals a lovely satiny texture, great intensity and a racy
backbone to support the vibrant fruit, finishing long with some tropical notes
coming through. Although it is delicious now, it is certainly closed compared to
what it will be in a year or two and can easily cellar for 20 years or more.

The 2021 Ch?teau Margaux saw a traditional ?levage in new barrels, with bottling in July, and as readers will remember, it's a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that benefited from late picking, appreciable percentages of saign?e, and a strict selection. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, blueberries and raspberries mingled with hints of licorice, white flowers and charcoal, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a broad attack, lively purity and sweet structuring tannins, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. It's a classic that will richly reward bottle age.

The 2021 Ch?teau Margaux is clearly one of the finest wines of the vintage. Offering up a deep bouquet of raspberries, wild blueberries and plums mingled with sweet spices, violets, licorice and hints of cigar box, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with terrific depth at the core and beautifully refined, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, floral finish. Combining the vibrant flavors and moderate alcohol (13.1%) of a vintage of the last century with all the precision of the present in extraction and ?levage, it is a timeless classic; and lest that be mistaken for a euphemism for a lack of concentration, note that the wine is analytically as high in polyphenols as the brilliant 2019. Representing only 36% of the estate's production, the 2021 is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

A challenging growing season, which saw Margaux touched by spring frost and end-of-season rot, delivered a heterogenous crop, but the estate can afford both to take risks (harvesting reds between September 24 and October 13) and select rigorously. Philippe Bascaules opted to saign?e his tanks to concentrate the musts, especially the Merlots, and then vinified gently. "After a saign?e, you really have to ease off on extraction if you don't want to overdo it," he explained. But the concentration of the ensuing wines took him aback, exhibiting analytically similar levels of tannins to the superb 2019s. Margaux always producers fresh, vibrant wines, so pHs are similar to was was attained in other recent vintages; what's different, however, are alcohol levels, around 1% lower than 2018, 2019 or 2020. As the accompanying tasting notes attest, the grand vin itself and Pavillon Blanc both number among the wines of the vintage in red and in white.

The 2022 Ch?teau Margaux has come together brilliantly with ?levage. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, cedary pencil shavings and pen ink that are deftly framed by new oak, it's full-bodied, dense and layered, with a concentrated core of intensely sweet fruit, broad structural shoulders and a long, resonant finish. With air, it only becomes more voluptuous, yet that's controlled by underlying tannic grip to deliver a more classical profile than was apparent during ?levage.

A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, 2022 Ch?teau Margaux is one of the most powerful wines ever produced at this estate, wafting from the glass with aromas of cr?me de cassis, dark berries, violets, burning embers, smoked tea and exotic spices. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's rich, velvety and seamless, with a bright core of fruit and a long, heady finish. With the highest analytical measure of tannins since 2010, and an alcohol level a touch above 14%, this is certainly a larger-scaled Ch?teau Margaux, yet at this early stage, everything appears to be kept in check.

Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's concentrated and structured, with a rich core of fruit underpinned by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin. This is a serious Pavillon Rouge that will reward some patience.
