The 2013 La Mission Haut Brion, a blend of 65% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 32% Cabernet
Sauvignon, has a very pretty bouquet. It is not intense or powerful, as you would
anticipate given the growing season, but it unfurls in the glass to reveal wild
strawberry, raspberry and dried quince scents, augmented by dried orange peel and bay
leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry. This is fresh
in the mouth, focused and in the context of the 2013 vintage, quite vivacious, full of
energy, especially on the finish. While it might lack the depth, that Merlot lends it
the fleshiness that lifts this La Mission Haut Brion above others.
Tasted at an off-line dinner in Singapore. This is such a lovely Pessac-Leognan that
is drinking perfectly now. It has a slightly austere, reserved nose that opens up slowly
in the glass with touches of cigar box and tobacco that become more accentuated
with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a sense of natural balance, a little
dusty perhaps, but great poise and nonchalance towards the finish. It will not
ameliorate, but I can see this La Mission cruising along its plateau for at least
another decade. Drink now-2020. Tasted November 2009.
Another superb wine in an off year, the 1993 La Mission shows a deep plum/
ruby color and a sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with charcoal and mineral.
The wine is medium-bodied, with ripe tannin and elegant, concentrated richness
that persists on the palate. This wine is coming into full maturity and should last
for at least 10-12 years. This is undoubtedly the sleeper of the vintage. Last
tasted, 9/02.

The second wine is also a great success, revealing much of the character of its bigger brother, although not the weight or richness. The open-knit, plush, opulent, fresh, lively 2011 La Chapelle de la Mission is ideal for drinking in its first 10-15 years of life. I can't say enough good things about the job Jean-Philippe Delmas has done after taking over for his well-known father at La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion. As long-time readers know, I am an addict for both of these wines.

La Clarte de Haut-Brion is the second wine of both Haut-Brion Blanc and La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, produced from the declassified selections from both estates. This vintage is a blend of 51.7% Sauvignon Blanc and 48.3% Semillon, harvested from the 29th of August to the 10th of September. The estimated label alcohol degree is 13.5%. The 2019 La Clarte de Haut-Brion needs just a little swirling and coaxing to begin to shake loose lovely scents of Golden Delicious apple, ripe peaches and lemongrass with nuances of allspice, white pepper and shaved almonds. The medium-bodied palate offers a great intensity of spiced stone fruit flavors along with a satiny texture and seamless freshness, finishing savory.
The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion is a brilliant effort that exhibits a level of balance and integration that are impressive in such a powerful young Bordeaux.

ラ シャペル ド ラ ミッション オー ブリオン 2021 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion 2021
The 2021 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion offers up a complex, fresh bouquet with aromas of lead pencil, spices, dark berries and menthol. Medium to full-bodied with a fleshy texture, it’s perfectly balanced with a structuring core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, ethereal, delicate finish. It’s more polished and round than Le Clarence de Haut-Brion.

Aromas of dark berries, rich spices, loamy soil and new oak introduce the 2021 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming wine with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and powdery tannins that gently assert themselves on the finish. While it can't match the polish and elegant of La Clarence de Haut-Brion this year, it's a fine second wine.

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion is a brilliant effort that exhibits a level of balance and integration that are impressive in such a powerful young Bordeaux. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with burning embers, pencil shavings, violets and smoked black tea, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered, elegantly muscular profile, its brooding core of fruit framed by a generous endowment of powdery tannin that tempers the ripeness of the vintage. Checking in at 14.7% alcohol, it's nonetheless more classically styled than the more flamboyant 2019 vintage or even the slowly maturing 2010 which I re-tasted alongside for context.
