The Hawaiian shirt, known as “Karajishi-Botan” or “Mythical Lion and Peony Flower” if translated directly into English, is a very rare work made of “Sarasa” (Chintz Cotton) fabric that was produced in the late 1930s originally for traditional Japanese clothes. It is believed that the shirt was made of “Yukata” fabric in the era when Hawaiian shirt was just commercialized. It has been once released by Sun Surf in a year of 2001, but the fabric and print were re-analyzed more precisely to be re-released for the first time in almost 20 years.
Sun Surf duplicated the fabric based on the authentic vintage shirt in every detail from the spinning and weaving to the distinctive wrinkles of the fabric. When it comes to the print, we fully use the same primitive printing technique used for Japanese “Yuzen” dyed textile, which are the hand-drawn dyeing using a resisting agent and “Tataki” that is to blur print-colors for natural gradation.
In addition, other charm is that it was elaborately crafted by hands of a skillful Japanese-Hawaiian sewer. Interestingly the back panel of the shirt had to consist of 2 pieces of fabric that put together at the center because the Japanese fabric was narrower than ones of western. Although it is unknown whether this shirt was made of used Yukata fabric brought by a Japanese immigrant, or of new Yukata fabric, it is no exaggeration to say this shirt can be an extremely valuable piece of material in studying the history of the early days of Hawaiian shirts.
