ニホントゲクマムシ(Echiniscus japonicus Morikawa 1951)は異クマムシ綱トゲクマムシ目ヨロイトゲクマムシ科に属するクマムシで、体長は約0.3mm。日本中に幅広く分布する。熊手のような鋭いツメ、背中の装甲板、そして前方に大きく延びた側毛が特徴的である。周囲の環境の乾燥に伴い生命活動を止めて耐え忍ぶ「乾眠」能力を持ち、その耐性は陸生のクマムシの中でも比較的強い。E. japonicusの種分類についてはRamazzotti & Maucci (1983)の総説で疑問が示されており、E. reticulatusと統合することが提案されている。
Echiniscus japonicas (Morikawa 1951), a tardigrade about 0.3mm in length, belongs to Class: Heterotardigrada, Order: Echiniscoidea, Family: Echiniscidae. It is widely distributed in Japan, and characterized by the long claws, dorsal plates, and long lateral appendages (cirrus A). Majority of limno-terrestrial tardigrades are tolerant to extreme environments, such as extreme cold, heat, high pressure, vacuum, and radiation, and E. japonicus has high anhydrobiotic capabilities. Classification of E. japonicus from E. reticulatus is controversial, as reviewed in Ramazzotti & Maucci (1983).
